What is TOEFL?

TOEFL, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is a standardized, fee-based test designed to assess the ability to use and understand the English language in an academic setting for non-native speakers of English. TOEFL was created in 1964 by ETS – Educational Testing Service, a private organization based in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. TOEFL is therefore a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service. Most American, Canadian and English universities recognize or require the TOEFL for admission of foreign students.

What are the three forms of the TOEFL?

The paper version (PBT or Paper-Based TOEFL scored out of 677 points), the computer version (CBT or Computer-Based TOEFL scored out of 300 points), the internet version (iBT or Internet-Based TOEFL scored out of 120 points). Since 2005, the internet version has been used in host centers. This test is based on the principle of the time-limited multiple-choice quiz for grammar, listening and reading. Writing skills are tested through an essay.

What is the structure of TOEFL iBT?

TOEFL iBT is held online in safe centers around the world. The test lasts slightly more than 4 hours and consists of four parts: Reading tests the candidate's ability to understand non-technical texts, categorize information, fill in tables and complete a text summary. Listening tests the ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America, using everyday vocabulary, expressions and grammar. Questions are used to interpret the speaker's attitude, purpose and motivation. Speaking or conversation tests the ability to express oneself in English.

The candidate must express his/her opinion on a given subject or comment on a text or dialogue that he/she has read or listened to previously. Writing: This section assesses the ability to write a text in English on a given topic. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to have, organize, and support ideas using standard written English in an essay. The candidate must also write a text based on what he or she has read or heard before. TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer only. The organizer, Educational Testing Service, sends official copies of the results. A TOEFL score is valid for a maximum of two years.
